Elise & Miles Meet the Honeybees

Personal Project

Best friends Elise and Miles take a trip through a beehive.  Making honey with thousands of bees is hard work, but the reward is sweet!

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

E&M2_Character_Real Bees.jpg

To start with the character design of the bees, I referenced real queen, drone, and worker bees. I then stylized the bees and drew them from many perspectives. There are 60,000-80,000 bees in one hive. So there are lots of bees in this book.

VISUAL DEVELOPMENT

With The Shrinker already designed in the previous book, I wanted to push the perspective. This happened throughout the sketches of the book.

The bottle of honey played an important role in the story, so I took time to make this prop look like a legit product. Because this is a Bite-Sized Book, it's a honey bear bottle—of course!

Before diving into sketches, I create these rough sketches. While things change naturally along the way, this lays out the plan for the book.

Two explorations for the front cover. The cover needed a singular focus, so I revised the sketch.
